“should I book third party or direct?”

One of the most common questions I get:

Should I book third party or direct?

A lot of travel bloggers would tell you very emphatically that you should ALWAYS book direct. I have a bit of a mixed view on it so I thought I’d share my thoughts…

BENEFITS OF BOOKING DIRECT:

-If there is any issue for any reason, it is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to get the issue resolved if you book direct. This is true for airlines, hotels, car rentals, etc. If something is ever canceled or needs to get refunded, it’s a hassle to go through a third party.

-Some hotels will give you better treatment (i.e. better rooms, late checkout, etc.) if you book directly

-Easier to build up loyalty / reward points with specific airlines or hotels. Sometimes you can do this while still booking third party (ie if you book a Delta flight through Expedia you can still add in your sky miles number) but not always.

BENEFITS OF BOOKING THIRD PARTY:

-Sometimes it’s easier and faster (ie more convenient)! When you can get a quick overview of all the options and then choose one on the same website, it’s less hassle!

-You can build up reward system with the third party apps (for instance, I get a 15% discount at most hotels for using Booking.com so much)

-If you get travel credit card points and you book through your credit card’s 3rd party system, your miles often extend further.

Ultimately, I try to book direct whenever I can. But if you find it significantly easier to go with third party, I’m not gonna rain on your party. Almost always it will work out. But just know that you miiiiiggghht regret it later on.
